PLANETARIUMS 39 T he ESO Supernova Planetarium & Vis- itor Centre is a cooperation between the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS). The building is a donation from the Klaus Tschira Stiftung va” over Munich by European Southern Observatory JULY-AUGUST 2018 (KTS), a foundation that promotes natural sciences, mathematics and computer sci- ence. ESO will run the facility. Having developed the idea for an exciting and innovative new building for astron- omy education and public outreach, the late Klaus Tschira, then Managing Director of the Klaus Tschira Stiftung and the Hei- delberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, started discussing options with ESO for T his spectacular evening pic- ture, taken a few days before the opening, shows a conjunction of the planet Venus with the young crescent Moon in the background.
