4 ASTROBIOLOGY The confirma- tion (or denial) belongs to the fu- ture, but at present we can hope to be facing what remains of the earliest forms of extraterrestrial life discovered in our solar system. Maybe they were not green, as tradition would like them to be, and for sure they did not pilot spaceships, but if they really existed, the Martians thrived for millions of years, until their planet dried up, leading them to extinction.
