R Webb detects tiny quartz crystals in clouds of hot gas giant by NASA/ESA/CSA Margaret W. Carruthers & Christine Pulliam esearchers using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope have detected evidence for quartz nanocrystals in the high-altitude clouds of WASP-17 b, a hot Jupiter exoplanet 1,300 light-years from Earth. The detection, which was uniquely possible with MIRI (Webb’s Mid-Infrared Instrument), marks the first time that silica (SiO 2 ) particles have been spotted in an exoplanet atmosphere. “We were thrilled!” said David Grant, a re- searcher at the Uni- versity of Bristol in the UK and first author JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2024 " ـــــــــــــــــﺐ " و ﻜﺘﺸـــــــــــــــــﻒ ﻠـــــــــــــــــﻮرات ــــﻮار ﺰاﻟﺼــــﻐ ة ﻓــــﻲ اﻟ ﻏﻴــــﻮم ﻋﻤﻼق ﻏﺎزيﺳﺎﺧﻦ : ﻘﻠﻢ ﺑﻮﻟ ﺎم ﻣﺎرﻏﺮﺖ د ﻠﻴﻮ وﻛﺮﺴﺘ و ﺎﻻت اﻟﻔﻀﺎء ﻧﺎﺳﺎ إ ﺴﺎ / / اﻟﻜﻨﺪ ﺔ إ ﻛﺘﺸـﻒ اﻟﺒـﺎﺣﺜﻮن ﺑﺎﺳـﺘﺨﺪام ﺗﻠﺴـﻜﻮب ﺟﻴﻤﺲ وﻳﺐ اﻟﻔﻀﺎﺋﻲ اﻟﺘـﺎﺑﻊ ﻟﻨﺎﺳـﺎ د ﻟـﻴﻼً ﻋـﲆ وﺟـﻮد ﺑﻠـﻮرات اﻟﻜـﻮارﺗﺰ اﻟﻨﺎﻧﻮﻳـﺔ ﰲ اﻟﺴﺤﺐ ﻋﺎﻟﻴﺔ اﻻرﺗﻔﺎع ﻟـ WASP-17 b وﻫﻮ ﻛﻮﻛﺐ ﻧﺠﻤﻲ ﺣﺎر ﺷﺒﻴﻪ ﺑﻜﻮﻛـﺐ ا ﺸـﱰي ﻳﺒﻌــﺪ 1300 ﺳــﻨﺔ ﺿــﻮﺋﻴﺔ ﻣــﻦ اﻷرض . ﻗﺎل دﻳﻔﻴﺪ ﻏﺮاﻧﺖ اﻟﺒﺎﺣﺚ ﺑ ﺠﺎﻣﻌﺔ ﻣﺠﻠﺔ FreeAstronomy ﺎﻟﻌﺮ ﺔ 22 - ﻳﻨﺎﻳﺮ ﻓﺒﺮﺍﻳﺮ 2 0 2 4
